  • Rick Riordan, the 1 New York Times bestselling author, has quoted about families in his book,The Sea of Monsters Families are messy Immortal families are eternally messy Sometimes the best we can do is to remind each other that we re related for better or for worsed try to keep the maiming and killing to a minimum Kwei Quartey, an American crime fiction writer and physician, has penned his third novel in the Darko Dawson series called, Murder at Cape Three Points , which is not only a mind blowi [...]

  • Opening on a happy note, Inspector Darko Dawson and wife Christine are in the hospital with their son, Hosiah, who has finally gotten the heart operation he needed Meantime, two bodies appear drifting in a canoe at an offshore oil drilling rig Charles and Fiona Smith Aidoos, prominent members of the local community Charles works PR for Malgum Oil and Fiona is active in politics Their niece, Sapphire, petitions for assistance, and CID Colonel Lartey forces Darko off family leave to investigate in [...]

  • his is my 2nd Darko Dawson mystery The first was the first, Wife of the Gods I read the hard copy for that one and enjoyed the writing as well although I thought the author could improve his craft overtime I think he has with this one although as at least one other reviewer indicated it could have used some better editing For instance, passages like e said sincerely suggest the author does not trust himself to capture the mood and intent of the character through what he has already set up prior [...]

  • Perfect flight read, short and interesting Not as good as the first 2 books in the series but I like the interplay of modern and superstitious Ghanaian beliefs as related to solving mysterious crimes.

  • This is the 3rd book in the series by Author Kwei Quartey and his hero, Inspector Darko Dawson This book follows Wife of the Gods and Children of the Street, all three books are 5 star mysteries I was hooked from the first few pages and could not put the book down until I finished it Again, Author Quartey is the master of twists and turns until you are breathlessly waiting to find out who done it The story begins when a tiny canoe is observed drifting slowly towards an oil rig at Cape Three Poin [...]

  • Very good straight forward police procedural set in Ghana Detective Inspector Darko Dawson has aural hand synesthesia where sounds, especially voices, can be felt in his hand This works as a kind of lie detector Nice balance between enough local flavor and travelogue mode.

  • Ghana set detective novel I liked it for the human stories of Darko and his wife and family and for the well drawn setting than for the murder mystery, which was well constructed but just left me a bit cold I m not in a very murder mystery place though, so ymmv.

  • I m enjoying this series The mystery was intriguing It seemed to get solved pretty quickly at the end maybe too quickly Darko was great in this novel.

  • I really like these Quartey crime novels They are well crafted and are quite the page turners The complex mysteries, set in Ghana, give a flavor for the culture and people of the country They are complex and the protagonists and supporting characters are quite likeable This is the third in the series I look forward to reading of them.

  • Darko Dawson, the detective, is working again in Ghana His work this time involves the brutal murder of a husband and wife, the Smith Aidoos and a man I congratulate Kwei Quartey for handling such a brutal incident in a gentle way He didn t throw it all in your face until you felt sick Murder At Cape Three Points is about environmental issues involving oil and the development of beachfront property There are also family disputes gone haywire between brothers and sisters and perhaps, a love affai [...]

  • Two bodies appear drifting in a canoe at Cape Three Points oil drilling rig They turn out to be Charles and Fiona Smith Aidoos, prominent members of the local community Charles works for Malgum Oil, the company who owns the rig The local police investigate but nothing comes of it Sapphire, the Smith Aidoos niece requests the help of the Ghanaian federal police and Inspector Darko Dawon of the Accra police is assigned In a world that where family is everything, Inspector Darko has an interesting [...]

  • I so enjoyed this mystery a new series for me Set in the oil boom coast of Ghana and featuring Inspector Dawson who has to work his way through a weave of family rivalries, the intricacies of oil company management, some bureaucratic roadblocks, and the intimation of ritual sacrifice to solve his case Torn from the side of his son s hospital bed where he is recovering from major heart surgery, Dawson must set aside his family worries to pursue the case from Accra to Takoradi and back again.

  • This was my first time reading a mystery that took place in Africa, and man, was it good The story was essentially a police procedural, with Inspector Darko Dawson as the investigating officer out of Accra, Ghana There were quite a few cast of characters who could have murdered the oil man and his wife It seemed almost everyone had a reason, so the story kept me engaged trying to figure out not only who had motive, but opportunity Without being preachy, the author touched on the greed of governm [...]

  • The Ghanaian setting is the main appeal of this standard police procedural in which Accra Inspector Darko Dawson is sent, with his politically well connected off sider, to investigate a three month old murder where the decapitated victim and his wife were discovered in a canoe off an oil rig Convoluted family connections and secrets bog down the narrative at times as the oil industry and corruption loom large but the detective is appealing, with synesthesia as his quirk, all feels realistic and [...]

  • Detective Inspector Darko Dawson would like to get promoted, but to have a chance he has to leave his son the day after heart surgery and take on an unsolved murder case further down the coast where offshore drilling has become a big business The plot involves two other children with serious medical conditions and the tragedy of medical treatment being available but not within the parents financial reach The setting of the book is fascinating but the context of the plot is the despoilization of [...]

  • The best Darko Dawson book yet What a complicated story, weaving together multiple murders over several decades, and a very modern family And yet every detail was wrapped up I had no idea who the murderer was This book kept me on my toes until the very end And I loved picking up the cultural nuances of Ghana I can t wait to read the next entry

  • I have found a new murder mystery series Definitely a 3 1 2 star book Well written, well crafted mystery set in Ghana inAfrica Although Darko Dawson is not quite as delightful as Precious Ramotswe, he is an interesting character that I look forward to becoming acquainted with through the series.

  • Splendid writing of the divide between foreigners and natives, of wealth and greed in a place that seems to have too little regulation and less justice Darko navigates these waters and finds the truth.

  • A good read Cookie cutter detective novel Add Ghana culture and politics A mans position in society International oil companies are evil globally.Familial reverence slaughter is evil locally.Poverty versus gluttony.Definition of character in broad stroke well done.

  • A great read Really enjoyable The denouement left a bit asking, hence 4 stars But a fun character in our Inspector and a delightful story to follow with lots of twists and turns A very fun glimpse into Ghanian culture

  • Suspenseful, well written mystery that is a page turner with fascinating use of locations, great characters, and solid, intriguing twists Highly recommended.

  • This is the third I ve read listened to I really didn t like the narrator, Dominic Hoffman, which diminshed the experience a bit Not as engaging as the first one, but I do like them.

  • Dawson still being a creep oversexualizing women view spoiler cheating on his wife hide spoiler etc but other than that, still a fine mystery set in a vibrant Ghana.

  • Described by the author as the land nearest nowhere, Cape Three Points appears to be a place of unspoiled beauty on the Ghanaian coast in West Africa where two bays form the three peninsulas which give it its name, jutting into the Atlantic Ocean, where the horrific murder of a wealthy middle aged couple, Charles and Fiona Smith Aidoo, is discovered Their bodies are found in a fishing canoe drifting near a deep sea oil rig, the man having been beheaded Inspector Darko Dawson and his assistant, D [...]

  • Once again author Kwei Quartey takes readers right into the heart of Ghana As Dawson investigates, we see Ghanian home life, we sample the country s food, and we are shown the gaping divide between those who have money and power and those who do not Darko Dawson is a complex character who grows with each book He has a wife and children whom he loves dearly, but life can still throw temptation his way Marijuana used to be his stress reliever, but he knows he must stay away from it He s learning h [...]

  • Detective Inspector Darko Dawson is sent from Ghana s Criminal Investigation Division headquarters to investigate a gruesome double homicide The murder of Charles and Fiona Smith Aidoo had occurred four months earlier and had stymied the local detective assigned to the case Darko doesn t want to take on the case because his young son Hosiah is still in the hospital recovering from heart surgery, but his boss gives him no choice The murders involve than one crime scene The Smith Aidoo s car was [...]
